On Sunday, I dropped off my most recent piece I Wish You The Sunshine Of Tomorrow to be considered for the upcoming juried exhibition at the Markeim Arts Center, Russet, Rouge & Bronze. Knowing that the prospectus for the show was looking for works of art that uses the “colors and themes of the season”, I wasn’t sure if this piece would fit the bill. But I remained hopeful and received the confirmation email today!
After I took the drawing to Markeim, I went to Jefferson Hospital for a memorial service for my dad. The pastoral care department hosted a service for all of the people who died while receiving care at Jefferson Hospital. It was incredibly moving and brought my grief out and into the public view. I actually hadn’t cried that much since the day my dad died and his funeral. The searing heartache of the loss of his presence made me feel raw with emotion. It is truly challenging to find the words to convey the sadness and the pain of the 7 months he endured in the hospital.
It is motivating to me that this piece resonated with the juror of the exhibition. It gives me fuel to keep creating work that explores themes of grief, death and loss.
Join me on Friday, November 14 from 7-9 pm for the opening reception of Russet, Rouge and Bronze at the Markeim Arts Center, 104 Walnut Street, Haddonfield, NJ 08033.
