Through a series of maps designed to take the viewer on a journey of the mind and soul, I create complex abstract compositions layered with paint, intricate line work, thread and gauze to construct a conversation on grief and loss. I developed these maps to include symbols that represent phases of the grieving process and to navigate through my own experience with grief. The layers within each map are an exploration of one’s own psyche. They represent the multitude of feelings one might encounter throughout their own experience with grief. Meant as a guide through the secret landscape of devastation and loss caused by death, I have created maps to serve as a dialogue so that we may become more comfortable as a society in expressing our feelings surrounding these issues. This visual exchange is for others to examine their grief in addition to being a place where I can contemplate my own grief.
